To truly understand why some portable heaters cost ten dollars and others cost a hundred, you have to look inside the chassis. We purchased a retail Heatoor unit, stripped it down on our workshop bench, and evaluated the internal build quality and safety components.
The Anatomy of a Ceramic Heater
Inside the plastic casing, the Heatoor consists of a small positive temperature coefficient ceramic heating element, a basic computer-style fan, and a simple control board. The components are standard off-the-shelf parts commonly found in budget electronics.
While the assembly is tidy, the lightweight plastic housing feels fragile and lacks the robust heat-resistant properties of premium metal-bodied heaters. This raises concerns about long-term durability under heavy winter usage.
Safety Features Under the Microscope
On the positive side, the unit does feature a basic tip-over switch on the bottom and a thermal cut-off fuse to prevent overheating. However, because the unit plugs directly into wall sockets, it can block adjacent outlets and put physical stress on older Kiwi power points.
We also noticed the internal fan is relatively noisy for its small size, producing a high-pitched hum that might disturb light sleepers if used on a bedside table overnight.
Is It Worth Your Cash
Our technical teardown confirms that the Heatoor is a cheaply manufactured mass-market device sold at a premium markup. You can find identical heating performance at local New Zealand hardware stores for a fraction of the online import price, backed by local consumer warranties.
